This week we're talking with novelist J. Carol Nemeth, author of the Christian romantic suspense novella, Courage on the Run in the Dangerous Pursuits Collection, (Indie, October 2021).

A native North Carolinian, Carol always loved reading and making up stories since childhood, and she began writing in junior high school. 

She worked in the National Park Service and served in the US Army, where she was stationed in Italy. That’s where she met the love of her life, Mark Nemeth, also an Army veteran. They’ve lived in various locations including North Yorkshire, England. They now live in West Virginia, where in their spare time, they enjoy RVing and traveling to research for Carol’s books. She also enjoys reading and crocheting. 

Carol and Mark have two grown children, a daughter-in-law, a son-in-law, and three amazing grandchildren, as well as a lab fur baby named Holly.

Please tell us one random thing we might not know about you.

When I was serving in the US Army, I was given the privilege of giving a briefing to a US Army Commanding Brigadier General from the European theater while I was stationed near Pisa, Italy. I had not yet been promoted to Seargent at that time, so it truly was a privilege. His office sent me a personally signed and framed letter from that general, stating how he was impressed with my briefing. I was blown away by it. I still have that framed letter.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Courage on the Run.

It’s actually a novella. Courage on the Run is one novella included in the Dangerous Pursuits Collection. 

Casey Hartman checks handsome Will Kerns into Belmont Inn, her family home passed down through generations. He claims to be on vacation, but when Casey witnesses a murder, Will flashes his DEA badge and takes her on the run. His real mission is to seize a drug operation in the historical town of Belmont. 

Casey can’t believe this is happening in her little town, much less that she witnessed a murder. 

Will is determined to take down the drug ring and the man leading the operation, but can he do that while running with Casey? She wasn’t part of his mission. 

Will soon realizes this courageous young woman of faith has stolen his heart. However, no amount of love will prevent a determined killer from finding them, no matter where they hide.

What is it about Casey that will make your readers care about her?

Casey Hartman runs a bed and breakfast in the old home that’s been in her family since the early 1800s. It went through the Civil War and was used by both sides. She’s proud of her heritage and of her town of Belmont, and her home also bears the name of Belmont Inn. She believes her old home town is picturesque and perfect and the people of the town are pretty much the same. Casey soon discovers she’s been blind to the truth.

Write one sentence that tells us something about your main character as a child.

I didn’t write anything about Casey as a child, but if I were to do so, Casey would have had an idyllic childhood in this family home with all her past family members around her.

Carol, what is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I’m reading a series called The Brotherhood of the Black Tartan by Nicole Van. I had never read any of her books before. I saw a review by a fellow Winged Publications author for the first book and it was available for free, so I downloaded it. It was awesome.

They are not Christian books, but they are clean romantic suspense books set in the early 1800s. I’m on the fourth book now and I do recommend this series because they engage the mind. They’re set in Scotland and England and have engaging characters as well as well written settings. The author has done a great job of writing the suspense, which is drawn out through the series. I even pre-ordered the final book and I’m looking forward to reading it.

What are you working on now?

I’m writing the final book in my Faith in the Parks romantic suspense series. If anyone has read any of my books in this series, they’ll know these books are set in various National Parks. The final book will be set at Gettysburg National Battlefield Park.

And now let's visit with novelist Gail Kittleson, author of the historical women’s novel, Second-Hand Sunsets (WordCrafts Press, January 2021).

Writing has always been Gail’s passion, but it took decades to develop the self-confidence required to become an author. Previously, she earned her M.A. in Teaching English as a Second Language and instructed college expository writing.

As a Baby-Boomer reared on a farm, Gail cherishes the old-fashioned values of rural life. Her memoir led to fiction writing and a bona-fide addiction to the World War II era. I love to walk and am presently recovering from hip replacement surgery.

Walking is a great joy to me as well, Gail! It's great exercise, and you can accomplish a lot of thinking or listening to music or to audiobooks while enjoying nature. I'm glad to hear you're recovering from your surgery.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Second-Hand Sunsets.

The Civil War era presents the perfect opportunity to re-invent oneself, and Ray McHale takes full advantage. 

Grieving the loss of her betrothed and her parents, Abigail Ferguson grows bitter and rejects even her pastor’s consolation. Believing she is cursed in her Missouri hometown, she accepts Ray’s offer of a hasty departure for Arizona Territory. She packs just one trunk, and at the last minute adds her father’s copy of Les Miserables and her mother’s Bible.

Two years after Abby and Ray reach their plot under the Mogollon Rim, Martin Tolzmann, a Cavalry sergeant who once met Abby in her father’s general store, receives orders to ferret out a rustler of government cattle.

What is it about Abby that will make your readers care about her?

Abby is quite young at the outset, an only child. She is convinced her terrible losses—her betrothed to the war, her parents and aunt to a terrible fire—set her apart from other people as cursed. Unable to borrow others’ faith any longer, she gives up on the spiritual side of life, and on beauty. Once, she loved to sketch, but she leaves her pencils, paper, and other tools behind. I think we’ve all felt a little like this at times, and can identify with the temptation to push away anything that reminds us of the past.

Yes, it's difficult to feel inspired or creative when one is depressed or feeling poorly physically. 

Consider the characters you’ve created. You know how characters can evolve as we write their stories? What was one way a character changed from how you initially imagined him or her, either in this book or some other story you’ve written?

I’ve recently completed a World War II manuscript about a British immigrant to Texas Hill Country. After losing his wife and home, he and his butler buy some American property with an old stone house and a fruit orchard, and take his young son to live there.

Just as they are getting settled, something occurs with the butler that I didn’t foresee, and sets in motion events that greatly alter the main character’s life. Quelle surprise! Since I’m a “pantser,” this type of thing occurs quite often, and I love the way the characters whisper our next steps in my ear.

So do I. Much more fun than following what was planned.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I really enjoyed Bookends by Liz Curtis Higgs. I usually don’t choose contemporary stories, and especially not romances, but found this one at my neighbor’s garage sale, to be honest. I would recommend this book because the setting deals with historical facts being investigated, so it’s an historical novel in disguise. Also, the characters come off as real, with redeemable flaws that in essence draw them to each other.

What are you working on now?

I’m between the novel I just described and going back through a cozy mystery one more time to make sure it’s in the best shape possible for publication.

I love to cook and have quite the collection of cookbooks. For my daughter’s wedding, I put together all of my own recipes to give to my kids. It was quite a daunting project and ended up being four binders!

I can imagine! That was such a labor of love, putting your recipes together for your kids. The last time I had to pack to move, I gave about fifty cookbooks to the library! 

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Bridge of Gold.

Underwater archaeologist Kayla Richardson is called to the Golden Gate Bridge where repairs to one of the towers uncovers two human remains from the late 1800s and the 1930s. The head of the bridge restoration is Steven Michaels, who dives with Kayla, and a friendship develops between them. 

But as the investigation heats up and gold is found that dates back to the gold rush, more complications come into play that threaten them both. Could clues leading to a Gold Rush era mystery that was first discovered during the building of the bridge still ignite an obsession worth killing for?

What is it about Luke that will make your readers care about him?

Luke -- the hero in the 1933 timeline -- is a diver working on the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge. He has to make some really tough decisions in the story to provide for and protect the woman he loves.

Write one sentence that tells us something about Kayla as a child.

Kayla -- the heroine in the present-day timeline -- was an elite swimmer in her childhood and youth.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

Pepper Basham’s Hope Between the Pages – it’s such a great story and the setting is amazing. The characters really came alive for me!

What are you working on now?

Currently, I’m reading the final page-proof galleys for A Deep Divide (book one in the Secrets of the Canyon series releasing in October) and I’m writing book two in the same series (releasing from Bethany House October 2022).

Two years ago, Jessica Miller made a mess of her already confusing life. Now, she’s back in Boyne Heights, and she’s determined to fix her reputation. She can’t seem to avoid the past that haunts her, but that’s the joy of small-town life—word spreads and people remember. 

Intent on her mission, however, she faces her past head-on, taking a job with her ex-boyfriend while avoiding her grandmother’s attempts to find her a new one.

What is it about Jess that will make your readers care about her?

Jess is smart and beautiful, but she’s also made plenty of mistakes and her life isn’t perfect. Readers relate to her struggles and decisions (even the hard ones).

Write one sentence that tells us something about Jess as a child.

Jess adored the men in her life—her handsome grandpa, her rough-around-the-edges daddy, and her doting older brother.

It's nice to read the occasional book with solid male characters! 

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

The Sowing Season by Katie Powner. It’s the story of a 60-something Gerrit forced into retirement and 16-year-old Rae, his neighbor. They form an unlikely friendship as he learns how to deal with his past and she prepares for her future. This is way outside my normal genres (romance and women’s fiction) but the characters are great and there’s a hint of humor throughout—I loved seeing how the characters navigated life and their relationships. It was hard to put down.

What are you working on now?

A follow-up to Avoiding Marriage. I hadn’t planned to write a series, but people want to know what’s going to happen next in Boyne Heights, so I’m going back with a new female character who will find her life entwined with Felix’s (Jess’s brother).

Readers have related to her because she has escaped lies, made bold choices, and yet struggles with physical limitations that frustrate her. She continues to discover that the Maker can accomplish His purposes even in her weakness.

Oh, my, how often do we all make wrong assumptions, even while trying to serve our Maker? That's a good quality to give your heroine.

How do you restart the creative flow when you feel a block coming on?

Brainstorming with writing buddies, taking a walk, going to a museum.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I’m currently listening to the audio book of The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. His fantasy novels are rich and full of interesting characters and detailed world-building that I admire. 

I'm such a fan of audio books now. So many of my tasks (especially power walking!) are now pleasures, thanks to the adventures I have through audio books.

What are you working on now?

A new stand-alone epic fantasy novel.

I’ve been struck by lightning.

Wow. I don't think I've ever actually met someone who experienced that! I won't make any puns about your sparkling personality--I'm sure you've heard them all.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Dust.

In 1977, when nineteen-year-old Allison Middleton receives a proposal of marriage from Westley Houser, she eagerly accepts, having no idea the secret Westley carries—a secret that will change Allison’s life forever. But Allison rises to the challenge of raising Westley’s toddling daughter as though she were her own.

I love stories that draw readers into the young lives of people now in the later stages of life. All too often we act as if older people never lived. 

How do you restart the creative flow when you feel a block coming on?

I take a walk. Or I watch an old movie. Or, listen to good music. Sometimes, I sit down with what I know is a good book. Let someone else’s talent become the muse.

Yes, I've actually watched movies before with the express purpose of keeping that right hemisphere open to what might spark. The ideas are never the same as what's going on in the film, but the inspiration is there.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

Right Kind of Fool by Sarah Loudin Thomas. The book was entered in the Selah Awards. When the first score came back, I knew I wanted to buy my own copy. I saw Sarah a week later at a conference, but I didn’t tell her I had ordered the book … I wanted to see, first, if I liked it. Liked it?? I could hardly put it down. Such talent this girl has!

Great recommendation. I read the summary on the Amazon page--intriguing! 

What are you working on now?

The Third Path, which is nonfiction. I’m also researching some WWII history and doing research for a series of children’s books.

You have such an impressive list of accolades for your novels, Nancy! Please tell us one random thing we might not know about you. Something that has nothing to do with writing.

I performed in community theatre in Brigadoon, My Fair Lady, and Fiddler on the Roof.

You're definitely strong in the arts! 

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Eyes of Our Heart.

When I write a novel, I become totally invested in the characters. So do readers, and they often ask me what happened to so-and-so. That’s why I decided to revisit some of my favorite characters in Eyes of Our Heart. I chose some favorites from A Steadfast Surrender, the Mustard Seed Series, and the Sister Circle series, placing them all fifteen years later.

Eyes of Our Hearts was inspired by Ephesians 1: 18: "I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people." This verse spurred me to follow five ordinary people as they share a common desire to see how God is working in their lives. But are they willing to merge their journey with His?

One eagerly accepts His invitation but has her own ideas about how His plan should play out. One feels she is too ordinary and of little use. One tries too hard to make things happen. Another continues their faithful life, seeking His ways. Yet another wants nothing to do with Him. How would you react?

That's a fascinating idea. I wish I had thought of it! It's such a good idea for those readers, as you said, who wonder what happened to characters featured in your past works.

How do you restart the creative flow when you feel a block coming on?

I interview one of my characters about the important moments in their lives. That usually reveals some interesting personal history that leads to a new scene or plotline.

I believe I'll actually use that hint to generate some new info for the Christmas novella I'm currently writing. I'm not stuck, but your idea probably helps at any point in the writing process.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

Randy Alcorn’s Safely Home. It showcases the persecution of Christians in China. But it’s so much more than that. It really made me think about the depth and strength of my own faith. What would I sacrifice for my faith? It’s a book I will never forget.

What are you working on now?

I’m working on a novel called An Undiscovered Life. My mother died in 2020 at age 99. While going through her belongings I realized all the different roles she’d played in her long life: a wife, mother, entrepreneur, teacher, saleswoman, activist, fashion designer, dreamer . . . It inspired An Undiscovered Life, a book about a matriarch who shares the lessons of her life with her family. They discover they have much in common, and much to learn—and cherish—from each other. We shouldn’t think of our elders as simply old. They are seasoned and wise and can be an inspiration!

Yes! And we do ourselves and our elders such a disservice to put off learning about them and from them while they're still with us. I was so glad my grandson took such an interest in my father's WWII career while my father was still alive. We learned things I never knew. Your new novel sounds like it will be excellent.

I started doing this on March 21, 2020 when the pandemic was starting, and I’m still doing it over a year later. Now it’s finally time for Sophie to follow her own pursuits. Seth has a new job, and Jenna is set to marry her college beau in Piper’s Cove. But the destination wedding reunites Sophie with best man Aiden Maddox, her high school sweetheart who left her without a backward glance. When an advancing hurricane strands Aiden in Piper’s Cove after the wedding, he finds the hotels booked to capacity and has to ask Sophie to put him up until the storm passes. 

As the two ride out the weather, old feelings rise to the surface. The delay also leaves Sophie with mere days to get her bookshop up and running. Can she trust Aiden to stick around? And will he find the courage to risk his heart?

Please tell us one random thing we might not know about you.

I guess because I’m introverted (and possibly because I’m a woman), most people are surprised to learn that I play the drums. 

I love that--you probably couldn't have picked a more noticeable instrument to play, but I saw you play before. You truly focus on the instrument, rather than the attention! 

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Bookshop by the Sea.

There’s something very compelling about first love, and in Bookshop by the Sea we have a couple that was madly in love years ago but couldn’t quite make it work. They both had underlying issues that kept them from having a healthy relationship, and they needed to grow up a little in order to recognize this. So, when Aiden reenters Sophie’s life, there’s a lot at stake. The feelings are still there. The chemistry is still there. But so are the problems. Sophie has to learn to trust herself and others, and Aiden has to overcome his fear of abandonment in order for the couple to finally find their happily ever after. I so enjoyed writing these characters—and watching them grow—and I can’t wait to introduce readers to them!

What is it about Sophie that will make your readers care about her?

Sophie has always put others first. While still in high school, she cared for her bed-ridden mother. And after her mother’s passing, she finished raising her siblings, seeing them through high school and then college. I hope readers will be rooting for Sophie as she finally has the chance to follow her own dream—opening a bookshop by the sea!

It does sound like a dream!

Imagine you’ve been contracted to write a novel about a real person. About whom would you want to write?

Can I please make Beth Moore my next protagonist? Her romance story has already been told (and lived), but I just feel as if she’d bring a whole lot of spiritual depth to a novel—not to mention a whole lot of fun!

I've loved the answers to this question this month--I'd be interested in any of the novels suggested.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I highly recommend Colleen Coble’s Pelican Harbor series! It starts with One Little Lie and follows Sheriff Jane Hardy through a web of intrigue that’s related to her past. The series has all the suspense and romance to keep those pages turning.

What are you working on now?

I’m currently hard at work on my next series, set in a North Carolina town in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. The first book, Riverbend Gap, releases in October, 2021.
