I’m very involved with Guide Dogs for the Blind. I’ve been a puppy raiser, and now I’m a breeder custodian. It’s exciting to see what these wonderful dogs are able to do to help visually impaired people live full and independent lives.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of At Lighthouse Point.

Blaine Grayson returns to Three Sisters Island with a grand plan--to take Camp Kicking Moose to the next level. Her dream starts to unravel when she discovers Moose Manor's kitchen has been badly remodeled by her sister, Cam, who doesn't know how to cook. Added to that blow is the cold shoulder given by her best friend, Artie Lotosky, now a doctor to the unbridged Maine islands.

As old wounds are opened, Blaine starts to wonder if she made a mistake by coming home. Little by little, she must let go of one dream to discover a new one, opening her heart to a purpose and a future she had never imagined.

What is it about Blaine that will make your readers care about her?

Blaine has had a few extra innings of adolescence…and she’s trying so very hard to catch up. A lot of people, I think, have a Blaine in their life and will appreciate what’s running through her mind.

I love that characterization--a few extra innings of adolescence. I think you're right--most of us either know or have been someone like Blaine. 

How do you restart the creative flow when you feel a block coming on?

Get. Away. From. The. Computer. Seriously! I go outside and take a walk or garden or play tennis. Fresh air for the brain works wonders for a re-boot.

Yes, the distraction often opens things up in the right hemisphere!

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

The Midnight Library by Matt Haig. It’s sweet…and sad…and there’s one pivotal scene that, to me, has a remarkably redemptive moment.

I read that as well. I think the overall theme is an important one, which made me think of two of my most favorite Christmas stories. I don't want to spoil anything by saying which ones...

What are you working on now?

I’m just about to turn in the first in a new series (still to be named). I’ll give you a few hints: it’s set on Cape Cod, in the summer (of course), and is all about an ice cream shop. Seriously delicious research required for this one!

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of The Moonlight School.

What’s so wonderful about this novel is that it’s based on a true story, so even if I tell you the entire plot, it won’t stop you from reading (I hope!). 

I want everyone to know about what happened on September 5, 1911. So here goes the quick version: Cora Wilson Stewart, superintendent of education for Rowan County, Kentucky, had an idea to open the rural schoolhouses on moonlit nights to illiterate adults. She hoped 150 adults would come…and over 1,200 came! Within two years, she had eradicated adult illiteracy in her county.

How terrific!

What is it about your lead character--Lucy Wilson--that will make your readers care about her?

So, in the prior question, I gave you the basic plot. But Cora Wilson Stewart isn’t the lead character, and there’s a reason for that. Every novel needs a love story, and that just wasn’t going to work for Cora. She had been divorced three times (twice to the same man!), and marriage was not her thing. Instead, she threw her passion into her work. 

Thus, I created a fictitious character, Lucy Wilson, who came to Rowan County at Cora’s request. Lucy’s father was Cora’s cousin, and raised his daughter to enjoy a refined, well-educated life in Lexington. Facing the poverty of Appalachia was a shock to Lucy’s system. Little by little, she was able to get past her initial prejudice to discover the beauty of the culture, the traditions, the community. Helping her along in her journey was a handsome stranger with a little mystery, too.

This month I've been asking authors to imagine being contracted to write a novel about a real person. You've essentially done that with this novel.

Yes, Cora Wilson Stewart was such an intriguing woman to me—way ahead of her times. The conventional academic thinking of the day was that adults couldn’t learn to read and write. Once childhood ended, a door snapped shut. Cora accepted that thinking until three encounters changed her mind. She challenged convention…and looked what happened next!

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles. The main character created an entire life for himself within a hotel—purpose, community, enrichment--and I think there’s a wonderful lesson about accepting circumstances that all of us need during this global pandemic.

I've heard a lot of people recommending that one, and I see it's going to be a limited series for TV, directed by Peaky Blinders director, Tom Harper. I'll need to read the book beforehand!

What are you working on now?

Just starting a new novel (first in a new series!) about an ice cream shop on Cape Cod. Set during the summer, of course.

I play tennis. Quite a bit of it. In fact, I’m a captain for several USTA and recreational leagues. Years ago, I played against an elderly woman who gave me a wonderful piece of advice. “Don’t ever stop,” she said. She meant it for tennis, but I took it as wisdom for aging in general. By the way, she beat me soundly.

Oh, she's so right! My daughter and son-in-law have become avid players, and they're in far better shape than I was at their age. I can see how sticking with it could keep one healthy. But you're right, as well. It's so important to stay active both physically and mentally. 

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of On a Coastal Breeze.

Life is good for Madison Grayson. Newly licensed as a marriage and family therapist, she can’t wait to start her practice. Maddie feels like she’s finally found her sweet spot. Not even one panic attack in the last year. Not one.

And then Ricky O’Shea drops in. Literally. The one man in the world she hoped never to see again—the one who’d been her archnemesis from kindergarten through Senior Prom—parachutes into town, landing on Boon Dock. Now Pastor Rick, the new minister on Three Sisters Island.

Time to panic.

What is it about Maddie that will make your readers care about her?

Maddie is in between two sisters, a middle child in every way. She’s the heart of the family, holding everyone together through thick or thin. Her sisters would call it Velcro, or perhaps a sticky, suffocating glue.

Maddie has a tendency toward catastrophic thinking, but when you’ve faced the worst-case scenario, you know it can happen. And probably will.

Have you ever written a novel with a seasonal (or holiday) setting/theme? If you had to choose a seasonal or holiday setting, which would you choose?

I’ve written two novels set during the Christmas season (Christmas at Rose Hill Farm and A Lancaster County Christmas). I’ve loved writing them for two reasons: winter scenes create a wonderful backdrop. And Christmas novels have happy endings. After all, the entire point of Christmas is a joy-filled miracle: Emmanuel, God is with us.

Amen to that. I love being able to read a good Christmas novel during the season.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

A Gentleman in Moscow, by Amor Towles. Such a creative story about a life lived in community in the most unlikely setting.

Hmm. I visited the book's page on Amazon. Towles has wonderful ideas for his novels, including the one you mentioned. Truly creative. Thanks for that recommendation.

What are you working on now?

Book 3 in the Three Sisters Island series. It’s such fun to swoop back to this island—I know it so well that I feel as if I’m jumping right into it. Every nook and cranny, bird and beach, quirky characters. You know what they say: A small town is just like a big family.

I've never been to Niagara Falls or anywhere in the area of Three Sisters Island. I'll have to check out your series and visit that part of the country vicariously (which is the only way any of us can visit anywhere at the moment).

I play tennis. Quite often. My son told me recently that if I don’t respond to a text message right away, he knows that I’m either on the tennis court or I must be dead.

I have family members who are pretty much addicted to the sport, so I can imagine your passion.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Two Steps Forward.

Sylvie Schrock’s choice to raise her sister’s son as her own was a hard pill for her father to swallow. After he called the little boy Willie Jitmit (say that three times fast) a few too many times, she left her ultra conservative Amish community and moved to Stoney Ridge.

Next door neighbor Jimmy works on Sylvie’s farm and grows intrigued by his lovely new boss—so unlike other girls. The problem is that Jimmy’s mother can’t abide Sylvie, for many reasons, especially knowing Sylvie is, according to Jimmy, a ‘hillbilly Amish’.

What is it about Sylvie that will make your readers care about her?

A church like Sylvie’s might seem backward to outsiders like us. Those kinds of churches hold tight to tradition, resist change more than other Amish groups, and are the most restrictive to technology. They’re also more isolated.

But Sylvie Schrock’s upbringing defines her outlook in some wonderful ways. She’s kind to all and content with little, a rare quality that comes from one who has lived without creature comforts.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

Just finished the book Where the Crawdads Sing, by Delia Owens. It pulls you forward with that question, “What happens next?” Didn’t see that ending come, either.

On an historical novel set in 1911 in Eastern Appalachia. It’s based on a true story about a remarkable woman, an unsung heroine. My favorite kind of story!

One of the joys in my life is being involved with puppy raising and breeder keeping for Guide Dogs for the Blind. You just can’t take yourself too seriously when a puppy is tearing through the house with someone’s underwear in its mouth.

What a wonderful experience that must be (underwear and all). And what a fulfilling endeavor! 

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of On a Summer Tide.

Camden Grayson loves her challenging career, but the rest of her life could use some improvement. "Moving on" is Cam's mantra. But there's a difference, her two sisters insist, between one who moves on . . . and one who keeps moving.

Camden Grayson can’t be stuffed into a box. She’s bright, bold, ambitious, overly optimistic…and clueless when it comes to personal relationships. Her flaws—and there are many—make her thoroughly likable!

Let’s say someone wrote a novel based on your life. What would the title be?

Detective Mom. I just have a strange radar when it comes to people and trouble. Drives my kids crazy. As a mother of four, I consider it a gift. ;)

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

Just finished Laura Frantz’s A Moonbow Night (Revell). She has such a rich imagination, and wonderful grasp of pre-Revolutionary Colonial America. And wow, that girl knows how to create a romantic male lead!

What are you working on now?

Just opened a new document to start book 2 in the Three Sisters Island series. Each of the sisters will take a turn as the main character, so next up is Maddie, a newly certified Marriage and Family Therapist (who has never been married nor had children).

I imagine there are more therapists out there in that situation than we would hope, lol.

In the last year, Luke Schrock has been in and out of rehab three times, but now he’s back to stay. He’s returning to the Amish community of Stoney Ridge to seek forgiveness, one by one, from those he’s hurt through his behavior. In a way, for the Amish, that’s the easy part. The Amish community forgives him, but they don’t trust him. Especially Izzy Miller, a girl who’s savvy to a guy like Luke Schrock.

But Deacon Amos Lapp and Bishop David Stoltzfus insist that Luke not stop there. He must also ask each person how his harmful behavior affected them. That’s where things get sticky. Not a comfortable assignment! And yet it has remarkable, life changing consequences—for Luke and for others.

What is it about Luke that will make your readers care about him?

Luke Schrock is the most exasperating, impossible person in the little Amish church in Stoney Ridge. Handsome, charming, irascible, clueless. All that, but even more frustrating…he’s hard to stay mad at.

Who is one of your favorite fictional characters?

Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird. Such a noble man!

Oh, yes. Loved him in the book, and loved how Gregory Peck portrayed him in the film.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman. It’s a curious tale of healing, with many moments of redemption.

What are you working on now?

On a Summer Tide, book 1 in the ‘Three Sisters Island’ series—releasing in mid April. You might be surprised to learn that it’s neither Quaker nor Amish. But it is a charming community, set on a remote island in Maine. The town is in great decline and a retired dad has bought it, named it for his three daughters, with hopes to bring his scattered family back together.
