For a limited time, my contemporary romantic comedy, Local Girl, is on sale for only 99 cents!
Here's a description of the story: Entrepreneur Edie Keegan achieves ever-growing acclaim for her popular Local Girl perfume. Her romantic life hasn’t been quite as successful, but that’s fine with her. As she insists to her matchmaking friend, Sara-Penny Butler, she’s not in the market for love. But Sara-Penny knows better, and she understands Edie and her painful past more than Edie realizes. When Ben Walsh, the town veterinarian, turns Edie’s head, she questions whether love is worth the risk of getting hurt, whether Ben is the man for her (despite her cat allergies), and whether Sara-Penny is ever going to mind her own business.

And now let's chat with novelist Denise Hunter, author of the contemporary romance, Bookshop by the Sea (HarperCollins Christian Publishing, April 2021). Denise Hunter is the internationally published bestselling author of more than 35 novels, three of which have been made into Hallmark movies. She has appeared on the The 700 club and won awards such as The Holt Medallion Award, The Carol Award, The Reader's Choice Award, The Foreword Book of the Year Award, and is a RITA finalist.
Denise writes heartwarming, small-town love stories, peopled with layered characters who struggle with real-life issues. Her readers enjoy the experience of falling in love vicariously through her characters and can expect a happily-ever-after sigh as they close the pages of her books.
When Denise isn't orchestrating love lives on the written page, she enjoys traveling with her family, drinking coffee, and playing drums. Denise makes her home in Indiana where she and her husband are currently enjoying an empty nest.
Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Bookshop by the Sea.
After her mother became bedridden and her father bailed on the family, Sophie found herself serving as a second mother to her twin brother, Seth, and younger sister, Jenna. Sophie supported her siblings through their college years, putting aside her own dream of opening a bookshop in Piper’s Cove—the quaint North Carolina beach town they frequented as children.
Now it’s finally time for Sophie to follow her own pursuits. Seth has a new job, and Jenna is set to marry her college beau in Piper’s Cove. But the destination wedding reunites Sophie with best man Aiden Maddox, her high school sweetheart who left her without a backward glance.
When an advancing hurricane strands Aiden in Piper’s Cove after the wedding, he finds the hotels booked to capacity and has to ask Sophie to put him up until the storm passes.
As the two ride out the weather, old feelings rise to the surface. The delay also leaves Sophie with mere days to get her bookshop up and running. Can she trust Aiden to stick around? And will he find the courage to risk his heart?
Please tell us one random thing we might not know about you.
I guess because I’m introverted (and possibly because I’m a woman), most people are surprised to learn that I play the drums.
I love that--you probably couldn't have picked a more noticeable instrument to play, but I saw you play before. You truly focus on the instrument, rather than the attention!
Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Bookshop by the Sea.
There’s something very compelling about first love, and in Bookshop by the Sea we have a couple that was madly in love years ago but couldn’t quite make it work. They both had underlying issues that kept them from having a healthy relationship, and they needed to grow up a little in order to recognize this. So, when Aiden reenters Sophie’s life, there’s a lot at stake. The feelings are still there. The chemistry is still there. But so are the problems. Sophie has to learn to trust herself and others, and Aiden has to overcome his fear of abandonment in order for the couple to finally find their happily ever after. I so enjoyed writing these characters—and watching them grow—and I can’t wait to introduce readers to them!
What is it about Sophie that will make your readers care about her?
Sophie has always put others first. While still in high school, she cared for her bed-ridden mother. And after her mother’s passing, she finished raising her siblings, seeing them through high school and then college. I hope readers will be rooting for Sophie as she finally has the chance to follow her own dream—opening a bookshop by the sea!
It does sound like a dream!
Imagine you’ve been contracted to write a novel about a real person. About whom would you want to write?
Can I please make Beth Moore my next protagonist? Her romance story has already been told (and lived), but I just feel as if she’d bring a whole lot of spiritual depth to a novel—not to mention a whole lot of fun!
I've loved the answers to this question this month--I'd be interested in any of the novels suggested.
What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?
I highly recommend Colleen Coble’s Pelican Harbor series! It starts with One Little Lie and follows Sheriff Jane Hardy through a web of intrigue that’s related to her past. The series has all the suspense and romance to keep those pages turning.
What are you working on now?
I’m currently hard at work on my next series, set in a North Carolina town in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. The first book, Riverbend Gap, releases in October, 2021.

And now let's chat with novelist Susan Meissner, author of the historical suspense novel, The Nature of Fragile Things (Berkley, February 2021).
Susan Meissner is a USA Today bestselling novelist with more than half a million books in print in fifteen languages. Her critically acclaimed and award-winning works of historical fiction have been named to numerous lists including Publishers Weekly’s annual roster of 100 best books, Library Reads Top Picks, Real Simple annual tally of best books, Booklist’s Top Ten, and Book of the Month.
Susan lives in southern California with her husband and yellow Lab, Winston.
Please tell us one random thing we might not know about you.
I do not like escalators.
They made me nervous as a child--I always worried they would consume me at the bottom! (at the bottom of the escalators--not at my bottom)
Please tell us a bit more about the plot of The Nature of Fragile Things.
Sophie Whalen is living in a terrible tenement in Manhattan in 1905. She’s so desperate to get out of New York -- for many reasons, and not all of which she shares with the reader -- that she agrees to marry a San Francisco widower who has a young daughter; a man she has never met.
By 1906 she has managed to cobble together a version of happiness for herself despite marrying this stranger. But when the quake hits in April 1906, everything in her world begins to crumble beneath her feet -- and I mean everything!
Sophie’s fate is soon intertwined with the destinies of two other women, as well as that of the little girl to whom she had become an instant mother and now loves very much. Sophie is thrust onto a perilous journey that will test her resiliency and resolve, and ultimately, her belief that love can overcome fear. It’s a novel about the bonds of friendship and mother-love, and the power of female solidarity.
Your novels are always chock full of character development!
What is it about Sophie Whalen that will make your readers care about her?
The story is told in first person point-of-view, so the reader is privy to Sophie's biggest and most private hopes and dreams and fears. But because of the intimacy of this POV, the reader also understands that there are certain things about Sophie's past that she does not revisit, even within herself. Because she has suffered, the reader can understand then why she makes some of the choices that she makes.
Imagine you’ve been contracted to write a novel about a real person. About whom would you want to write?
What a great question! Off the top of my head I would pick Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, who wrote the Gothic novel Frankenstein, which I suppose sounds really macabre. But think about it. She wrote this book in the early19th century, so well before women were writing novels in the science fiction vein, and to write a book about a doctor who reanimates life!? That’s just fascinating to me.
Me too! I felt like I had read a novel about her for a wonderful book club I belonged to before I moved to the west coast. But in looking through my records, it looks like the night we discussed Frankenstein--our read for that month--the discussion leader shared the story of the brainstorming trip at which Mary Shelley came up with the idea for the book. It remained a vivid memory for me. You should write the novel!
What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue is a novel by V.E. Schwab that I will not soon forget. It is definitely not for everyone; there is some language and some bedroom scenes, and the premise itself is chilling: A 17th century French woman – desperate to get out of an arranged marriage – makes a bargain with the devil. Addie Larue regrets the deal immediately when she realizes she is now not only immortal but afflicted with the condition of being unrememberable. By anyone. This means minutes after meeting her people forget her. She cannot hold down a job, she cannot own property, she can't even have a relationship with someone, because no one remembers her.
She asked for complete autonomy in exchange for her soul to get out of the arranged marriage and what she gets is an endless life where she’s not bound to anyone but no one is bound to her either. It's a mesmerizing look at what life would be like if there wasn’t a mighty and good God watching over us and holding back evil. This book also has the most satisfying ending that I’ve read in a long time.
I have that novel on my reading list--I must have read a positive review at some point. I didn't remember its premise being so dark! But it sounds interesting.
What are you working on now?
The book I'm writing now has the working title Only the Beautiful and is a novel about three generations of women impacted by the eugenics movement in the early part of the 20th century here in my home state of California.
Wow, I will definitely read that one. So many ethical questions there.

PROVIDENCE by Faye Roberts

With eternal spring on the wind, Katie has one final commitment to keep before she’s ready to reap her harvest—one final seed to plant after the hard winter—that seed of providence called hope.

Susan Page Davis is the author of more than 90 novels and novellas, primarily in the historical romance, romantic suspense, and mystery genres. She’s a winner of the Carol Award, the Will Rogers Medallion, and the Faith, Hope, and Love Chapter’s Reader’s Choice Award.

Please tell us one random thing we might not know about you.
My father was a seventh-generation resident in our little town in Central Maine, and I feel a bit guilty for moving away. But I don’t miss the long winters!
I can imagine how difficult it would be to leave that legacy behind. I'm with you on the winter issue, though!
Please tell us a bit more about the plot of The Rancher's Legacy.
Matt Anderson’s task is to collect his neighbor’s daughter Rachel Maxwell from the stagecoach depot in Fort Lyon, Colorado, and deliver her safely home. But on the way, he learns two things that throw their world into chaos: Rachel refuses to even consider their fathers’ plan for them to marry, and outlaws have placed the Maxwell ranch under attack.
As Matt and Rachel hear gunfire and watch vicious flames devour her home, an elderly widow in Portland, Maine, hires an investigator to locate her three long-lost grandchildren.
Rachel is devastated, and Matt’s dreams are crushed, but Edith Rose refuses to give up hope.
What is it about Matt that will make your readers care about him?
Matt is a caring, hardworking son. He’s also patriotic and loyal to family. He puts aside his own wants and ambitions to help others.
Imagine you’ve been contracted to write a novel about a real person. About whom would you want to write?
William the Conqueror.
Wow, that would be no small feat!
What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?
My husband and I have been enjoying the Lady Hardcastle mystery series, by T. E. Kinsey. They’re cozy mysteries set in England in the early 1900s, and they’re light and funny but have good mysteries in them. The first book is A Quiet Life in the Country.
Oh, those stories look like wonderful fun! An eccentric widow and her martial-arts-expert maid. I put a link to the seven-book set in your answer, in case any readers are interested.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on book 2 of this series, The Corporal’s Codebook. It’s about Matt’s younger brother, Elijah.

And now let's visit with novelist Bill Myers, author of the speculative and historical novel (with a dash of comedy), Rendezvous with God (Fidelis Publishing, March 2021).
Myers’s books and videos have sold over eight million copies and have earned 80 national and international awards including the C.S. Lewis Honor Award.
His children’s work includes McGee and Me as well as writing/directing for Focus on the Family’s Adventures in Odyssey.
Bill's adult work includes the novels, Eli (a retelling of the Gospel as if it happened today), Fire of Heaven Trilogy and Saving Alpha. His motion picture company has just released the children’s, live-action feature, Secret Agent Dingledorf and His Trusty Dog Splat.
If you're one of the few people who have never read anything Bill Myers has written, I would strongly encourage you to delve into one or all of his genres of work. He's talented, sharp, and very funny. His books always draw the reader closer to the Lord.
Bill, please tell us one random thing we might not know about you.
I teach The Life of Jesus at a fancy-schmancy prep high school.
Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Rendezvous with God.
Our hero, a recent bachelor smarting from the divorce of his unfaithful marriage partner, has his life turned upside-down when his impulsive, fourteen year-old niece decides to live with him.
To make matters worse, he begins slipping back into Gospel times for off-the-record discussions with Jesus Christ. Soon he realizes the conversations tie directly into the drama and bitter-sweet comedy of his own life.
"Myers has created angst-filled, lovable characters who reach real-world solutions in the midst of their struggles—not always the way they hope."
What is it about your lead character that will make your readers care about him?
He is shy, witty, and angst-filled—bungling his way through his new life as a single, trying his best to understand 21st Century women—a matter made no easier by the invasion of his impulsive, fourteen-year-old niece.
Imagine you’ve been contracted to write a novel about a real person. About whom would you want to write?
Jesus Christ. If he’s not available, Mark Twain.
Gosh, I do hope they're both in the same vicinity, eternity-wise.
What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?
Sorry, I’m not much of a novel reader. My ADD doesn’t let me commit to sitting down to long-form story telling (which may be why folks say they’re never bored with my books). I do read a ton of short stories (my favorite author is Andre Dubus who really gets into the heart and souls of his characters) and essays ( Brian Doyle is my favorite because of his humor and keen insights into the holy of everyday moments).
That's fascinating, Bill. I suppose it's less daunting to write a long-form story than it is to read one, when one deals with ADD. I do agree, though, that your books are never boring.
What are you working on now?
I’ve completed Volume Two of Rendezvous with God and just finishing up on Volume three.
