Vickie McDonough and Free Books!

When a woman from the North falls in love with a man from the South, just two years after the end of the Civil War, will she obey her father's orders to not see him, or will the pull of forbidden love be too strong to resist?

Before we talk with today's author, I want to announce that the winner of the free copy of The Pages of Her Life, by James L. Rubart, is:

Congratulations! We'll get your book right out to you. I encourage readers to keep commenting and/or subscribe at right (above my list of books) in order to learn about new releases! U.S. subscribers are entered in the drawings a second time when they comment.

And now let's revisit novelist Vickie McDonough, author of the Christian historical romance, Julia (Maverick Press, May, 2019).

Vickie McDonough is the best-selling author of 50 books and novellas. Vickie grew up wanting to marry a rancher, but instead, she married a computer geek who is scared of horses. She now lives out her dreams penning romance stories about ranchers, cowboys, lawmen, and others living in the Old West.

Vickie’s books have won numerous awards including the Booksellers Best and the Inspirational Choice awards.

When she’s not writing, Vickie enjoys reading, doing stained glass projects, gardening watching movies, and traveling.

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Julia.

Two years after the end of the Civil War, Julia Scott left behind the only home she’s known to travel the Santa Fe Trail with her father and little brother. Her father fought in the dreadful war that took the lives of her two older brothers, and he hates all things Southern.

When a man is thrown from a horse, Julia is out riding her mare and rushes to help. Although Taylor Marshall is a Confederate, he and Julia quickly become friends. By the time her father realizes it, Julia has lost her heart to the kind man. When her father forbids her from seeing him, Julia struggles.

Will she say goodbye to Taylor when the trail splits? Or will the pull of forbidden romance be too strong to ignore?

What is it about Julia that will make your readers care about her?

Julia is an independent but a kindhearted person who likes to help others. She raised her little brother and kept their farm going after her mother died while her father was still at war. On the trail, she befriends a woman with two young children who loses her husband in an awful accident.

What novel would you like to see brought to film?

Karen Witemeyer has some wonderful books. I’d really like to see her Short-Straw Bride made into a movie.

I love the book's tagline: "Four brothers. Four straws. One bride." Intriguing and, as the description says, "lighthearted."

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

The last novel I read is Tender Hope by Amanda Cabot. It’s the third book in Cimarron Creek Trilogy, and it has not one, not two, but three romances. I recommend the whole series. While each book is a stand-alone story, there are some excellent twists and turns that run through the whole trilogy. You’ll want to read all three books.

Great recommendation! What are you working on now?

I’m writing a novella called "Twice the Trouble" that will be part of the Mail-Order Standoff Collection. It’s the story of two identical twin sisters who have become mail-order brides. Before they arrive in town to marry two men who are cousins, they decide they want to get to know the men before marrying them. They step off the stage in matching dresses and refuse to tell the cousins which twin is which. The first chapter had me smiling quite a bit.

How fun! All the best with it.

Finally, what question would you like to ask my readers?

The novella I’m writing now is that last story I have planned. I’d like to know what storylines readers would like to see in a Christian romance, maybe something they haven’t yet seen.

I would like to see more Christian Fiction books like when I first started reading them - faith-based behavior, prayer, etc. I've been very disappointed lately in several authors I consistently read whose characters participate in worldly activities throughout the book.

I would love to read a story line about a man meeting a salon girl and brings her to know Christ falling in love with her after she falls in love with Christ. Could be he is a preacher and he runs into her. The saloon girl could be loud and lives an immoral life. I love how God can change lives!

I would like to see a story about a girl who inherits an Inn but it needs renovation. The carpenter she hires is grumpy but he has a good heart just some hardships in his past. First they clash but she wins him with kindness. It should be historical, my favorite genre.

Sarahmom, Congratulations on 40 years of marriage. That's awesome!

Trish, Thanks so much for hosting me again!

Linda, you might try reading more historical fiction. They tend to be a bit tamer and not deal with so many 'f the difficult issues today's people struggle with. Also, there are several Christian authors who have made the decision to tackle those harsher issues in hope of reaching readers who struggle with them.

Shonda, I'm pretty sure Miralee Ferrell has a book with a heroine who works in a saloon. It might be Love Finds You in Tombstone, AZ. I have a book called Joline's Redemption, and the heroine is working in a brothel at the beginning of the book. The bad choices she made in the first book in that series--Gabriel's Atonement--is what landed her in that bad situation.

Paula, I know there are books with the premise you're looking for. Try going to Amazon, click on the Books link, then try searching for "inn" or "boardinghouse." I have a series called the Texas Boardinghouse Brides. It's not exactly what you asked about, but it's a fun, mostly lighthearted series that features two of the Oklahoma land runs and the land lottery. The first book in the series is Gabriel's Atonement.

I would love to read a book where two young people meet for the first time and there is a hint of something special. He is in the military, she in college. Through their letters to each other, they grow closer and closer until they fall in love. This is what happened in my life and we will celebrate forty-four years of marriage in October.

What a cool story, Melanie. I love epistolary novels, too. I recently read 84 Charing Cross Road, which was actually true, based on letters between the author and the chief buyer of a London bookstore. It was very entertaining and ultimately touching.

Vivian, I love reading historical fiction too. There are so many great books with historical settings.

Sarah, What type of inn do you mean? I have a series set in a boardinghouse--the first book in that series is The Anonymous Bride

Melanie, That's a fun story. I have a novella where a woman writes to a soldier. It's part of a novella collection called Kiss the Cook. It's been out of print for a while, so I don't know if you can find it.
