And now let's chat with novelist Lillian Duncan, author of the suspense novel (with a little romance thrown in), Jane Doe (Harbourlight Books, June, 2020).

Even though her books cross genres, they have one thing in common, faith-based stories that demonstrate God’s love—and lots of action. Okay, that’s actually two things. She believes in the power of words to change lives, especially God’s Word.  

Please tell us one random thing we might not know about you.

I’m short! Very short. I’m 4’8” or at least I used to be. The doctors are saying I’m a bit shorter than that now but I’m not acknowledging that in any way!

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Jane Doe.

Raven Marks survives a brutal kidnapping, but she’s haunted by the memories. First because she doesn’t have any and then because she does. She wants to move forward with her life but one thought stops her. What if she’s not his last victim? As more memories surface she has to decide whether to put it behind her or try to protect others.

What is it about Raven that will make your readers care about her?

Even though she’s hit rock bottom (literally and figuratively), she refuses to give up. She not only fights her way back to good health but is willing to do what she must to bring her kidnapper to justice so he can’t hurt anyone else.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I’ve been reading The Giver series by Lois Lowry and am loving them even though they were written as young adult novels. They’re quick to read but make you think. I’d highly recommend them to anyone who hasn’t read them yet.

What are you working on now?

To be honest, not a whole lot. I finished writing my Messenger series which is a dystopian novel set in NewAmerica where even saying the name of God is a crime. I think I was so focused on that series, I’m having a hard time starting another project. But I’m not worried. Another story will come when the time is right.

I hear you. I'm even under some deadlines, and the stories are not yet bursting forth. It happens sometimes. I suppose that "fake it 'til you make it" adage occasionally fits with writing. Sometimes I don't remember those moments were even happening when I read back over things I've published!

Before we meet today's author, I first want to apologize to my readers and featured authors for my delay in posting my author interviews for the past two weeks. If I may briefly share something personal: my adult son was in a near-fatal accident while on vacation in Kauai last week. Many of you have followed the unfolding of events in my Facebook posts, and your prayers have been an extremely moving blessing.

We are still very much focused on his recovery--he's staying with me during that process. So my normal activities have been curtailed some, and your continued prayers for my son, Tucker, are very much appreciated.

That said, I'm trying to resume some normalcy amidst the chaos, so here we go.

Lillian is a multi-published author who lives in the middle of Ohio Amish country with her husband. After more than 30 years working as a speech pathologist for children, she believes in the power of words to transform lives, especially God’s Word.

She loves to write stories that entertain but also demonstrate God’s love for all of us.

Please tell us one random thing we might not know about you.

I’m very short—only 4’8”.

As is said about my two favorite dancers on So You Think You Can Dance, "small but mighty!" 

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Trapped.

Angelina has the perfect life—until she’s kidnapped. Even though she’s rescued, she continues to be trapped by the memories she can’t forget. But as she takes steps to become healthier, she begins to have delusions that someone is still after her—are they delusions or reality?

What is it about Angelina that will make your readers care about her?

We get to watch her go from being a selfish heiress to someone who really cares about others and is willing to go beyond the expected to help others.

Who is one of your favorite mainstream authors?

There are too many to pick just one—but I’ll try. I love James Patterson’s books, especially the Alex Cross novels.

I get you on that question. I love many authors, and it's difficult to pick one above the others.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

Meet in the Middle by LoRee Peery. I’m not a big romance novel fan, but this novel is sweet and cute. It was fun to read. Perfect for the beach.

What are you working on now?

I’m in the middle of edits for my next book—Jane Doe. And I’m busy promoting Trapped as well as The David Years. The David Years was released in August and is the second in my Puzzle House series.

Lillian is a multi-published author who lives in the middle of Ohio Amish country with her husband and a menagerie of pets. She was a speech pathologist for more than 34 years but retired in 2012 after being diagnosed with brain tumors as a result of Neurofibromatosis Type 2.

As an educator, speech pathologist, and a writer, she believes in the power of words to transform lives, especially God’s Word. Lillian writes the types of books she loves to read—fast-paced suspense with a touch of romance that demonstrates God’s love for all of us.

Please tell us one random thing we might not know about you.

I have two parrots, Rocky and Jasper. Jasper loves calling me a bookworm!

How cute. When I call my friend who has talkers, I think they get jealous. Or maybe they always make a lot of noise!

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Puzzle House.

The story revolves around Rachel Summers and Nia Johnson.

Rachel was all about Rachel until the day she crashed headlong into a semi-truck. While unconscious she has a very special visitor who ask if she wants to be healed or to be a healer.

Nia is a young teenager who’s dying. She’s been told by the doctors that there’s nothing left to do and she’s very angry about that. Against her wishes, she’s spending the week with Rachel at Puzzle House—a place of healing and hope but the only thing Nia feels in anger and hopelessness.

As the two work on Nia’s puzzle, they share a journey that will change both their lives.

What is it about Rachel that will make your readers care about her?

Early on Rachel is diagnosed with brain tumors because of a genetic disease (Neurofibromatosis Type 2). Instead of feeling sorry for herself, she focuses on God’s Will for her life.

Wow, talk about writing what you know...

What’s a news story from the last year or so that you think would make a good basis for a novel?

As I write this Hurricane Harvey devastated Houston and Texas a week ago and now Irma is heading for Florida. I’m sure there’s a story in there somewhere!

Interesting you would say that. I read recently about a new novel with characters in the midst of (and aftermath of) Hurricane Katrina.

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I’m reading Beast by Chawna Schroeder at the moment—actually re-reading it. The main character is Beast but it’s really about the beast in all of us and how God’s love can change us.

What are you working on now?

I just completed the sequel to Puzzle House a few weeks ago—The David Years. It focuses on one of the characters you’ll meet in Puzzle House. Right now, I’ve started a new Christmas-themed novel—A Christmas Stolen.
