Vickie McDonough and Free Books!

A Texas Ranger working undercover in the gang he is tasked with capturing encounters a pretty captive who changes all he had planned.

Before we chat with today's author, I want to announce that the winner of the e-copy of The Reluctant Groom, by Kimberly Rose Johnson, is:

Congratulations! We'll get your e-book right out to you. I encourage readers to keep commenting and/or subscribe at right (above my list of books) in order to participate in future book give-aways! Subscribers are entered a second time when they comment.

And now let's chat with novelist Vickie McDonough, author of the Historical Christian romance novella, Partners in Crime, in the collection: Seven Brides for Seven Texas Rangers (Barbour Publishing, March 2018).

Bestselling author Vickie McDonough grew up wanting to marry a rancher, but instead, she married a computer geek who is scared of horses. She now lives out her dreams penning romance stories about ranchers, cowboys, lawmen, and others living in the Old West.

Vickie is the award-winning author of more than 45 published books and novellas, with over 1.5 million copies sold. Her novels include End of the Trail, winner of the OWFI 2013 Booksellers Best Fiction Novel Award. Song of the Prairie won the 2015 Inspirational Readers Choice Award. Gabriel’s Atonement, book 1 in the Land Rush Dreams series, placed second in the 2016 Will Rogers Medallion Award.

Vickie has recently stepped into independent publishing.

She has been married for forty-two years to Robert. They have four grown sons, one daughter-in-law, and a precocious granddaughter. When she’s not writing, Vickie enjoys reading, antiquing, doing stained glass, watching movies, and traveling.

Please tell us one random thing we might not know about you.

Many years ago, my husband and I live on a kibbutz in Israel for a year. We celebrated our first anniversary in Jerusalem.

How romantic!

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Partners in Crime.

Micah McCulloch, a Texas Ranger working undercover in the Markham gang, is tasked with guarding a young, woman hostage. Cass Markham has ordered Laurel Underwood, a silversmith, to create a set of plates for printing counterfeit money, or she and her family will be killed.

Though highly skilled at etching silver and gold jewelry, Laurel knows she doesn’t have the expertise to do what she’s been told to do. Her only option is to stall and try to win over the handsome but reticent outlaw guarding her—or to escape.

But can she escape without the kind bandit stealing her heart?

What is it about Micah that will make your readers care about him?

Micah is an honorable man who’s not afraid to put his life on the line to protect others.

What have you learned about yourself as a result of your writing career?

All my life I jumped from one thing to another because I love learning new things. I thought of myself as a sprinter—doing one thing for a short while then something else. When I started writing, I really wondered if I would have enough determination to write a whole book. Well, I surprised myself. I really believe God led me to become a writer, and with Him on your side, you can accomplish a whole lot.

Amen to that, Vickie!

What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?

I love to read, but we have spent the past two months moving, cleaning out the old house, and setting up for a huge downsizing sale. On top of that, I’ve been reading through my Oklahoma Brides trilogy, which I got the rights back on. I’m going to self-publish it, but since it was the first series I wrote and my writing has improved since then, I’ve been making some changes. I honesty can’t even remember the last book I read. I can tell you that most of the books I read are historical romances. I love anything by Karen Witemeyer or Lacy Williams.

What are you working on now?

I’m writing a new novella called A Day Late and A Dollar Short, which is part of The Runaway Bride Collection. It’s the story of a young woman fleeing an unwanted arranged marriage by becoming a mail-order bride, but when she arrives in town, she discovers her intended married someone else the day before she arrived. With no money to travel further, she’s stuck in the tiny Texas town. The Runaway Bride Collection releases January 2019.

Finally, what question would you like to ask my readers?

This past week I read a blog post about how readers choose the books they buy/read. So I’m curious how your readers pick their books: author, title, genre, cover design, something else?

Thanks for hosting me today!

Thank you, Vickie, for visiting and telling us about yourself and your book. Readers, Vickie has offered to give away an signed copy of her novella collection. To enter, leave a comment and your email below in answer to Vickie's question, above. "Please enter me" won't get you entered. Remember that subscribers are entered an additional time in each drawing. The drawing is done by email, so leave your email address, like so: trish[at]trishperry[dot]com.

Many commenters are left out of the drawing because they forget to include a way for me to notify them of their win (their email).

Thank you for such an enjoyable interview! I love that Vickie fell in love with a man who didn't share her dreams she had when growing up, but now gets to writes her dreams. And it was interesting that she spent her first anniversary in Jerusalem on a kibbutz! She probably has good stories to tell from that experience. I pick my books mostly from word of mouth or blog reviews, and sometimes price. Although if I already love the author, price is not a factor. For new authors, I love that they usually have one free book so the reader can see if it's something they will like. Titles & cover designs will also draw me in, as well as the blurb about the book.

All of the above, it just depends. Sometimes I am familiar with the author, sometimes the title or the cover grabs me. I read most genres but I am not a sci-fi or futuristic fan.
I am looking forward to this book. Your story sounds great, and I love these Barbour collections. Thank you for the chance to win a copy.

I volunteer in the church library and have for almost 40 years, so I pretty much know what books we have, what people like to read, and which ones we need.
I check out book reviews, physically look at the book, the genre and whether that particular area is being checked out at all, I look up the author and publisher, skim through the book to see if any bad words jump out at me (and they have), and last but not least, the price. I scout around to see who can give me the most bang for my buck.

I choose books by favorite authors, their recommendations, covers that catch my eye enough to read what they are about and books others have enjoyed and told me about. I review every book I read and I try my best to only read those I think I’ll enjoy.

I choose mostly by favorite authors or genre. But if a cover catches my eye, then I read the blurb. I love historicals and suspense. Great if they are in the same book. I like humor, too: Like Drew Farthering Mysteries. I’m reading My Heart belongs in San Francisco by Janice Thompson and it has humor as well as history. I also try to review every book I read, because I know how hard you authors work on your books! paulams49ATsbcglobalDOTnet I am subscribed to this newsletter.

I enjoyed the interview very much. Thank you, ladies for taking time to share. To answer your question--I generally pick my books after reading book blogs just like this one. This is how I meet new authors and find out about books I'd like to read. Once I find an author that I like, I generally aim to read all her/his books. I read a wide variety of books in different genres by Christian authors. Sometimes, I just browse on author, publisher, or CBD sites. In that case, I usually am drawn to books with great covers. Thank you for the opportunity to win this collection. (I subscribe with a different email).

Enjoyed the interview! I am also married to a computer geek. With regard to answering the question asked, I am a visual person so if it is a new to me author an eyecatching cover will first grab attention. I especially love covers with bright colors. After a cover catches my attention I will read the back summary. If it sounds interesting I will look it up so I can read an excerpt and look for reviews. That helps me to narrow down and compose my wish lists.

Ladies, Thanks so much for stopping by today and reading my interview. I enjoyed reading about how you pick out the books you read. Sorry I didn't respond earlier, but I was at my mom's most of the day and she doesn't have Internet. Happy reading!

It all has a factor but a great cover and the blurb on the back pulls me in every time.
