Now let's revisit with novelist James L. Rubart, author of Soul’s Gate (Thomas Nelson, October 2012).
James L. Rubart is the best-selling, award winning author of Rooms, Book of Days, The Chair, and Soul’s Gate. The University of Washington was somehow convinced to give him a degree in Broadcast Journalism back in the mid 80s. He was an on-air talent for a number of years before starting his own marketing firm.
During the day he runs Barefoot Marketing which helps businesses and authors make more coin of the realm.
He lives with his amazing wife and two sons in the Pacific Northwest and loves to dirt bike, hike, golf, take photos, and still thinks he’s young enough to water ski like a madman.
I don't know, Jim. You look pretty comfy on those skis to me.
Please tell us five random things we might not know about you.
-- I use too much creamer in my coffee. (Have to kill the coffee taste, you know?)
-- I used to be a semi-pro magician.
-- Contrary to popular opinion, I’m an introvert.
-- The fingers on my right hand were smashed when I was 1 ½ years old and was told they would never grow. Insert God’s miraculous healing here.
--I’m scared of heights. (Which made jumping out of an airplane at 10,000 feet very exciting.)
You are insane.
Please tell us a bit more about the plot of Soul's Gate.
“Every now and then we get a break from reality. A glimpse into the other world that is more real than the reality we live in 99 percent of our days. The Bible is about a world of demons and angels and great evil and even greater glory.”What if you could travel inside another person’s soul? To battle for them. To be part of Jesus healing their deepest wounds. To help set them free to step boldly into their divinely designed future.
Thirty years ago that’s exactly what Reece Roth did. Until tragedy shattered his life and ripped away his future.
Now God has drawn Reece out of the shadows to fulfill a prophecy spoken over him three decades ago. A prophecy about four warriors with the potential to change the world . . . if Reece will face his deepest regret and teach them what he has learned.
They gather at a secluded and mysterious ranch deep in the mountains of Colorado, where they will learn to see the spiritual world around them with stunning clarity—and how to step into the supernatural.
Their training is only the beginning. The four have a destiny to pursue a freedom even Reece doesn’t fully fathom. But they have an enemy hell-bent on destroying them and he’ll stop at nothing to keep them from their quest for true freedom and the coming battle of souls.
Here’s what Publisher’s Weekly and RT Book Reviews have to say about Soul’s Gate:
Publisher’s Weekly: “Readers with high blood pressure or heart conditions be warned: this is a seriously heart-thumping and satisfying read that goes to the edge, jumps off, and “builds wings on the way down.”
RT Book Reviews made Soul’s Gate a Top Pick and says: “Rubart’s novel is enthralling and superlative. Truly a story about freedom from things that we hold onto, this tale will captivate readers and encourage a more active, dynamic spiritual life. The original plot and well-drawn characters elevate this book to “must read” status.”

What is it about Reece that will make your readers care about him?
As you read above, Reece was taken out, and because of his wounding lived in the shadows for years. I think there’s a longing in each of us to step more fully into the light, to step into the destiny God has designed for us and free ourselves from the chains that hold us back. I think they’ll care about Reece’s journey back into the light because it might be their journey as well.
What would you say was the turning point in your path to becoming a published author?
In the spring of 2006 I got a rejection from my dream publisher—Thomas Nelson, who is now my publisher—and when I told my wife about it she said, “I guess at some point you’re going to have to decide if you’re a writer or not, no matter what anyone else ever says.”
In that moment I decided I was a writer no matter what. I believed.
And look what God had in mind for you. What a terrific bit of encouragement for writers struggling for that first contract.
What is the last novel you read that you would recommend?
The Reunion by Dan Walsh. It got extremely dusty in the airplane as I read this book. The novel went to the deep places in my heart. I loved it and did not want it to end.
Yes, Dan's books have moved me like that, too.
What are you working on now?
I’m working on edits on the sequel to Soul’s Gate, called Memory’s Door which releases summer 2013. After that I’ll start writing the third book in the trilogy. And I’m working with a co-author on a non-fiction book for writers called, Live Free, Write Free which is for writers who want to discover a way to access, and write, the deepest stories of their hearts.

Ah here I am #1 not a good place in Random drawings lol but if Jesus was to be here with me I would need to here that I can put any ill feelings away... I do not doubt I am going to HEAVEN but as the analyzer that I am, I do let my mind wander~I want to join my grand parents, my parents, my step parents, my Aunts and Uncles...all those I loved and miss but more importantly, I want to feel my husbands arms around me again and see his beautiful eyes and smile...I try to live each day in a step in knowing that one day I will do just that ! and live in PEACE and Beauty forever...IN GODS LAND
Wow, this sounds like an exciting novel. I'm anxious to read it, and share it. I'd like to hear from Jesus, "We'll done, my good and faithful servant." But don't we all?
These sound awesome! I loved Rooms and haven't read the others yet, but have a couple on my TBR pile. I would love it if Jesus would tell me what I should do with my life, no guesswork or confusion, just straight out. What I probably need to hear, though, is "I love you. Trust me." shopgirl152nykiki(at)yahoo(dot)com
Ooh, tough question! I think we all would like to hear well done. I guess I would like to him say that I was forgiven. I know that I am but it's just so hard to wrap your mind around sometimes, and how awesome would it be to hear! Soul's Feature sounds great, thanks for a chance to win a copy!

Won't that be an amazing day, Soni! It's coming!
Yes, we do, Lori. To look into His eyes and know we lived well and by His Spirit.
Ah, yes, Veronica! TRUST! So good.
Liz, I get that. With my head I know I'm forgiven, but sometimes I don't know it with my heart.
Jim
If Jesus stood before me I would want to hear his words of peace, which he gives us in his Word. Also, I would love his voice to give me encouragement to do what I know he wants me to do. I've read all of Jim's prior books and my favorite of all is Rooms!!

Can you imagine just hearing His voice? Wow. I think just about anything He would say would floor me.
Certainly the things you all have mentioned--His love, forgiveness, peace--those are the things I know in my head, as Jim says. But seeing Jesus and hearing Him assure me firsthand? I can't even begin to grasp how amazing that will be.
I have (USA Book News award-winning) Rooms next on my TBR list. I'm horribly behind, but I hear absolute raves about Jim's stories. I have some catching up to do. Soul's Gate sounds awesome!
