Susan Page Davis and Free Books!

Hiram Dooley knows everything about guns--and next to nothing about women.

Before we meet today's author, I want to announce that the winner of the drawing for Calculated Revenge, by Jill Elizabeth Nelson, is:

littleronm@ . . .

Congratulations! I'll contact you today for your snail mail address, and we'll get your book to you right away. I encourage readers to keep commenting and/or subscribe at right in order to participate in future book give-aways!

Now let's revisit novelist Susan Page Davis, author of The Gunsmith's Gallantry (Barbour, June 2010).

What's new with you, Susan?

After more than 50 years in Maine, I'm moving to Kentucky. I write this as my husband is loading the truck. It's going to be a big adjustment, but we're sure we'll love our new state.

I'm a mom and a grandmom, and I have about 30 published novels.

Please tell us five random things we might not know about you.

-- I am a stroke survivor (Jan. 8, 1997).

-- I am a certified farrier (horse shoer).

-- I'm a descendent of John Alden, of Mayflower fame.

-- If there's a spider on me, don't tell me--just brush it off, thank you.

-- And my appendix burst when I was 9 months pregnant (the baby is now a healthy 25-year-old).

Wow, you are full of surprises, Susan!

Please tell us a bit more about the plot of The Gunsmith's Gallantry.

You've got to love Hiram. He's a very quiet man, but he thinks a lot. And right now he thinks his sister Trudy (Gertrude) is going to marry his friend Ethan and leave him all alone again. He also thinks his sister-in-law Rose is out to tie the nuptial knot with him, and the thought makes him shudder. The spinster schoolmarm, Isabel, seems to be in the marriage market too, when she's not worried about her father's odd behavior. But mostly Hiram thinks that Libby Adams is the smartest, prettiest, finest lady he's ever met.

What is it about your lead character that will make your readers care about him?

Hiram is a romantic soul whose true love died about ten years ago. He cries out to be coddled, though he doesn't ask for it. Though he's self-effacing, when the time comes for action, he's right there.

Why will readers enjoy your novel?

I hope they'll love the whole town of Fergus and the oddball people who live there. The Ladies' Shooting Club is on hand to help its members and serve the town. And there's plenty of conniving, deception, and mistrust going on. I hope they'll love the resolution to all this and stay with the folks at Fergus for another episode. So readers, grab your weapon of choice and saddle up!

Most writers struggle with the whole "show, don't tell" rule. For some, it can be difficult to even recognize when "telling" is happening. Please give us a brief example from your novel where you "show," and then write how that passage would have looked, had you "told."

Pow! Bang!

Girls screamed and jumped up, knocking books and slates from their desks. Isabel's chalk flew from her hand, and the book tumbled to the floor. Children scrambled in a tangle of pantalets and fallen benches away from the stove.

This scene is from Isabel's point of view. I tried to show what she saw and heard in those seconds after the noise. I'm not at all sure I've mastered show-don't-tell, but I try to keep the viewpoint and show only what that character senses.

Susan, I imagine readers who are in the early stages of their writing careers will gain some comfort in hearing a seasoned author like you say she isn't sure she's mastered show-don't-tell. I think we all slip into telling at times without realizing it.

What is the last book you read that moved you?

Mrs. Roberto, by Van Reid (Book 4 in his Moosepath League series, which I adore. I laughed, I cried, and shared bits with anyone who would listen. And I admired his skill with words and the brave ascensionist (in her balloon and her attractive pair of tights).

What are you working on now?

Moving. After we're settled I'll charge into writing Love Finds You in Prince Edward Island. It's set in 1860, when the Prince of Wales visited the island.

Oh, that sounds like fun! (Not moving--the book.) Where else can readers find you or your writing online?

Susan, it's a pleasure to meet you. I don't think I've ever "met" an actual farrier, is that as hard as it looks? I'm with you on the spider bit, just brush it off and tell me it was a piece of lint!

Your book sounds wonderful & I can't wait to read it - winning it would be even better!

Thanks for taking the time from moving to be interviewed & Trish thanks for bringing Susan to us.

Blessings to you both ~

Thank you for stopping by, Beverly and Carly. As to horse shoeing, yes, it is very hard work. In fact I didn't actually practice the art for long. When I learned I was pregnant with my first child, my husband insisted I quit shoeing, and I never took it up again. The hardest part for me was getting the OLD shoes OFF. It takes a lot of muscle sometimes. But I had fun writing about this profession in the third book of the series, The Blacksmith's Bravery (coming in December). Be sure to stick with the folks of Fergus for that one.

Mimi, I'm glad you are excited. Just don't ask me to shoe your horse. As I said, it's been a LOOOOOOOONG time since I did that. Jackie, I'm sorry you couldn't find the book in the store. Trish has made it easy by giving us three places to click and buy, or I'm sure any bookstore would order it for you. (That's if you don't win, of course!)

Susan is an author I love. Whow Susan I did not know you were a stroke survivor and had your appendix out. God has sure been with you. Moving from Maine to Kentucky - sure will be an adjustment.
I have moved so many times in my marriage life and found my church family where I moved to always become important to me and help me find friends and fit in.
I wish you the best.

Thanks for all your comments, friends. We are now in our new home and getting settled. Yes, it's very different here. We have the cutest little lizards. At least I think they are lizards--skinks? We didn't have those in Maine. And people are already giving away zucchini at church, when in Maine the gardens are just starting. I have my office set up and am working on the next book. Jane, the Lord has brought me through some very trying medical events, and I'm thankful I'm still here and can read and write. At the time of my stroke I couldn't do that for a couple of days, and it was very scary.

I hope you will love Kentucky - there are some great Christian authors there. My son and daughter in law live in the Lexington area and we enjoy visiting from our home in Tennessee.

This series sounds really good. Please enter me in the drawing.

So far, we do love Kentucky. And, Merry we had a LOT of stuff to move, but with some good helpers we made it. We also thinned out our "junk." Jodie, the largest chunk of time is in planning a new series or book. Once I have done the preliminary work and research, actually writing each individual book may take 3 or 4 months.

I love Maine and, if I lived there, don't think I could ever move - but Kentucky is a great state to live in. And I love the random facts!

Prince Edward Island is a wonderful setting for the Love Finds You series. Isn't that Anne of Green Gables country?!

I'm eager to read Gunsmith's Gallantry and appreciate the chance to win a copy.

Hello, Carole, Karen and Cindy! I think the covers for this series are outstanding, too, Cindy. Carole, you're right--PEI is Green Gables country. I took my two teenagers up there with me for a week of research, and we visited Green Gables just for fun.

Oh my, what a sweet story that sounds like fun as well. The ladies gun club puts me to mind of the Annie Oakley movie from years ago.

This story would make me laugh a lot, and I love to laugh. Laughing is so healthy and healing.

Thank you for offering this for the drawing. I'd be most pleased if I won.
